iPhone 6 Plus review
Its new, its different and its big. Yes, Apple has finally caught up with the phablet market and the iPhone 6 Plus is the answer for the phablet world.
Starting from the days of the original Galaxy Note, I was always inclined towards devices with at-least 4-4.5” screen. Anything lesser than that would look very small in my hands. iPhone 6 Plus is one huge device in my hands.
This is my first ever iPhone and when I held it in my hands, my first set of words for the phone were – it is beautiful. I have the space gray model and it looks damn good. It has rounded edges with aluminum back makes it the re-define the premium devices.
It was expected that sooner or later, Apple would respond to bigger screen device demand. It did this year with 5.5” iPhone 6 Plus and 4.7” iPhone 6. Apple also has iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C with 4” displays in the market. Do note that, the first iPhone was released with 3.5” display and was the trend till iPhone 5 which came with 4” Display.
iPhone 6 Plus comes with 5.5” Display with 1920*1080 pixel resolution, A8 chip 64-Bit architecture, 8MP rear camera and 1.2MP front camera, Home button with Touch-ID (with fingerprint recognition) and iOS 8. It has 2195 mAh battery which is sufficient enough to power the device for a day’s use.
There are 3 storage options with 16GB, 64GB and 128GB with 32GB moving out of the available options. It comes in Silver, Gold and Space Gray options.
Looks and feel:
The device is 77.8 mm in width, 158.1 mm in height and 7.1 mm in thickness. It is really thin for its magnitude. But its taller than its counterparts just because of the big bezels at the top and the bottom. It weighs around 172 grams. Its intermediate in weight and for me I do feel it being bit heavy.
Though it feels awesome, there is a downside with this huge device. The fear of letting it fall. The curved aluminum body might play spoilsport in some cases where it might slip out of your hand. A cover is always on for the iPhone 6 Plus, to protect it from the unexpected fall.
Apple has moved the lock switch from the top of the device to the side of the device due to the bigger form factor. This allows one to unlock the device using a single hand with a thumb. Another option is to use the Touch-ID to unlock, which works like a charm. Press the home button and keep the finger on the home button for a second and the device gets unlocked. Yes, fingerprint information has to be recorded to the device.
The volume controls are on the left along with the silent switch. The bottom hosts the 3.5mm audio jack, speaker grille, microphone and the lightening connector. The top of the device is plain. The front has the speaker, front camera, home button with Touch-ID and fingerprint sensor built into it.
iPhone 6 Plus comes with 5.5” Display with 1920*1080 pixel resolution and thus gives a pixel density of 401ppi. Being thinner, the display moves much closer to the screen and thus giving a stunning viewing angles. The Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on the front captures less fingerprints thus improving the usability.
The big display gels well with the curved design and I feel that it is best for games and video watching. It does improve overall experience with the device.
iPhone 6 Plus has almost similar camera module on the iPhone 6 except the inclusion of Optical Image Stabilizer on the bigger device.
The camera on this generation iPhones are the best till date on iPhones and amongst the best in the smartphones out in the market. Both the hardware components and software algorithms. Details captured are much more.
Timelapse and slo-mo (120 or 240 fps) videos make into the camera software along with the usual 1080p HD video recording (30 fps or 60 fps support). I could find options to control stuffs manually in the software. This is where, we can use the 3rd party apps which will give more control to users on the iPhone’s camera. Continuous autofocus during the video capture works like a charm.
Some samples from the iPhone camera.
The front 1.2MP camera allows 720p HD recording is best suited for video calling. It doesn’t work well when the lighting is not apt.
The A8 64-bit processor is mentioned to be better with respect to the predecessor and it has 25% more CPU performance and 50% more graphics performance while drawing only 50% of the power compared to its predecessor
Thanks to the dimensions, iPhone 6 Plus packs 2915 mAh battery and coupled with iOS8, the device was able to survive for 7-8 hours of heavy usage with the overall duration between charging more than a day. This would satisfy most of the folks out there.
This is one of the best device we have used till date. The best refined OS bringing the best out of the hardware gives users the best use cases to own this device. Some might feel this a humongous device. For such folks, there is iPhone 6 out there if they are looking at the Apple label.
- OS and apps
Could have been better:
- Bezel Size
- Front camera
- Not all the apps are optimized for bigger screen.
